Packaging Engineer


This role is responsible for maintaining packaging processes & equipment located at the Viant 620 Watson Street location.  Responsibilities will also include design, development, implementation and maintenance of medical device package systems, production packaging processes, and production packaging equipment. 


  • Function as lead in creation, development, and implementation of package designs and/or processes
  • Provide day-to-day support for production equipment and develop permanent solutions to identified issues
  • Perform project management tasks for assigned packaging process changes, packaging designs, and new packaging equipment implementation
  • Perform and document package testing while following industry standards
  • Work with customers and suppliers to design and procure equipment and materials necessary for product launch and/or sustainability projects
  • Lead efforts related to process validation (IQ, OQ, PQ) and risk identification
  • Perform and document troubleshooting techniques for production challenges and recommend/implement solutions for resolution
  • Create technical documents, rationales, and reports as required
  • Responsible for cross functional communication of project status and various packaging activities
  • Provide packaging support for new business opportunities
  • Recommend new packaging tools, technology, and methodologies including cost estimates and return on investment for equipment design or packaging process changes
  • Recommend/obtain the material, equipment, etc., required to perform tasks from various sources
  • Perform technical tasks from documented specification and/or written/verbal instructions
  • Perform and coordinate trial runs of packaging processes, sample preparation, etc.
  • Establish positive relationships with vendors and understand vendor’s capabilities and troubleshooting knowledge
  • Provide work direction to technical employees and operators
  • Provide formal training to production personnel on existing and new processes
  • Follow all GMP and SOP’s as defined by Viant policies, practices and procedures to insure that FDA and ISO regulations and quality standards are met



  • BS in Packaging, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering


  • 5-10 years in Packaging Engineering
  • 5-10 years in Medical Device Industry
  • Experience with Horizontal Form, Film, Seal equipment, Thermal Transfer Printers, Tray sealers, and Bar sealers desired


  • Proficient knowledge of Medical Device Packaging industry
  • Proficient knowledge of ISO 11607 part I & part II
  • Strong problem solving skills using structured techniques and tools
  • Above average mechanical and technical aptitude
  • General sterilization & microbiology knowledge
  • Advanced understanding of manufacturing processes and quality standards
  • Strong technical writing and verbal skills
  • Proficient ability to read and understand engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances and schematics
  • Proficient working understanding of Lean Manufacturing philosophies
  • Strong computer and technical skills
  • Knowledge of FDA QSR, ISO13485 and ISO14971 Risk Assessment


  • Office position with some travel.
