Mold Technician

DESCRIPTION

The Mold Technician is a technical role reporting to the Tooling Manager on all matters of periodic maintenance (PM) schedules and repairs. This individual will repair and perform PM for all actively running injection molds, jigs, fixtures, and custom component machines

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine maintenance of molds including daily cleaning and greasing; disassemble, clean, reassemble molds as needed
  • Work from detailed design drawings, engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instructions
  • Determine accurate and efficient methods to construct and repair molds
  • Select proper metals and other material and lays out work using precision measuring instruments (venires, dial indicators, micrometers, etc.), shop mathematics and pertinent formulas
  • Set up and operate all types of tool room equipment including: lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, etc.
  • Determine the sequence of operation, method of fabrication, type and amount of machine work or process operation required
  • Sample and qualify new molds; work with Quality Control (QC) for best processing parameters
  • PROVIDE realistic quotes and meet delivery times
  • Set up secondary equipment as needed to run jobs
  • Ensure quality of parts throughout production run
  • Support operators in assessing part quality; work with QC throughout first article inspections and capabilities studies
  • Help fill in for operators during breaks
  • Assist Process Technicians with set-up and trouble-shooting of production molds in Molding Department
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years of experience repairing and maintaining multicavity injection molds
  • Experience in building and machining new mold components and checking for form, fit, and function
  • Operational knowledge of all tool room equipment; ability to weld is a plus
  • Strong technical knowledge; troubleshooting skills related to molding defects observed in production
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary to maintain relationships with customers and co-workers

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Apprentice graduate or 5 years of mold experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

VISUAL ACUITY

  • Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as:
    • Preparing and analyzing data and figures
    • Transcribing
    • Viewing a computer screen
    • Extensive reading
    • Visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operating machines
    • Using measurement devices
    • Assembly or fabrication of parts at distance close to the eyes

CONDITIONS

  • Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature change
  • Worker is subject to noise: Sufficient noise to cause a worker to shout to be heard above ambient noise
  • Worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body
  • Worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals
  • Worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids

Worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways
