Mold Maker I

DESCRIPTION

The Mold-Maker’s primary responsibility is to disassemble molds and take the information given (both written and verbal) to troubleshoot and complete the assigned tasks. This can include repairing and engineering changes and any other aspects of mold repair. This position will analyze specifications, lay-out metal stock, and set up and operate machine tools. This individual will fit and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, molds, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools by applying knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, and metal properties, as well as layout, machining, and assembly procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with molding personnel, engineers, molding technicians, and process engineering to improve mold part quality and mold efficiencies, addressing any assembly problems due to molded parts quality
  • Work closely with other mold suppliers
  • Work with Mold Repair on design issues such as wear and other maintenance
    problems that may involve redesign of component parts and mold function
  • Work closely with all tool room personnel to assist in improving the operation
  • Work with Quality on mold approvals and measuring techniques for molded part quality
  • Participate in validations, design of experiments (DOEs), and mold approvals
  • Operate molding presses to process new tool designs
  • Specify, set up, operate, and maintain shop machining equipment, tooling, fixtures, hand tools, manuals, and spare parts
  • Produce part designs via the appropriate machining tool(s), outside vendors and Contract Services
  • Contribute to new product design, process optimization, scale-up, technology transfer and process validation activities
  • Operate milling machine, surface grinder, lathe, and other small machines
  • Collaborate with Design Group to build molds accurately, as well as for troubleshooting and mold revisions
  • Inspect damaged molds to determine solutions for repairs
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Journeyman Tool & Die Maker or Master CNC Machinist with 2+ years of experience and/or education and training via apprenticeship, vocational program, or technical college for tool or part design, machine programming, technical writing, and computer and mathematics courses
  • Basic electric discharge machining (EDM) experience
  • Competent with a wide variety of precision measuring instruments: microscopes, touch probes, noncontact vision systems (i.e. optical gaging products)
  • Material knowledge to select and purchase appropriate metals, alloys, material structures, and treatments
  • Experience in high-tech injection molding with polystyrene and/or micro plastic features, single and multicavity cold runners; hot tip and valve gate injection mold design and maintenance are desired but not required

EDUCATION

 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3+ years of experience in thermoplastic injection molding manufacturing preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

VISUAL ACUITY

  • Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as:
    • Preparing and analyzing data and figures
    • Transcribing
    • Viewing a computer screen
    • Extensive reading
    • Visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operating machines
    • Using measurement devices
    • Assembly or fabrication of parts at distance close to the eyes

CONDITIONS

  • Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature change
  • Worker is subject to noise: Sufficient noise to cause a worker to shout to be heard above ambient noise
  • Worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body
  • Worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals
  • Worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways
